Individualized Interdisciplinary Major (IIM)
Program Structure
One-of-a-Kind Study Track
IIM students are admitted through school-based admission and undertake a four-year interdisciplinary curriculum. Early requirements encompass the University Common Core and fundamental language, computer science and mathematics courses to build communication skills and the mindset for logical and efficient thinking.
At the end of Year 1, students undertaking IIM and faculty advisors create a program of study that addresses individual intellectual interests and helps each undergraduate excel in the area chosen. Courses to fulfill requirements may be drawn from different departments and divisions across HKUST’s Schools. Close academic monitoring and experiential guidance further benefit IIM students and ensure quality standards are adhered to and attained. At least 120 credits are required to graduate.
A UNIQUE 4-year Curriculum
* Local IIM students are allowed to register courses at HKU, CUHK and CityU and transfer the credits back to HKUST to fulfill the curriculum requirement
# IIM students are allowed to join the overseas exchange programs offered by IPO, Schools and the Office of Global Learning of HKUST.
Academic Advising
Fully Guided Along the Way
Advice, guidance and support are provided by the Individualized Major Advisory Committee (IMAC) - a four-person committee set up specifically to oversee an IIM student’s progress. Each committee will include two faculty advisors identified by the student as having relevant expertise, a professional from the student’s chosen area, or a third academic, suggested by the IIM Program Director. Students are expected to meet regularly with advisors to provide updates on coursework, activities and future plans.
Enrichment Programs
Extended Vision
IIM students are encouraged to participate in the inspiring extra-curricular options available to Interdisciplinary Programs Office undergraduates to broaden experience and further enhance leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Opportunities include overseas exchanges, study trips, case competitions, career training workshops, internships, and professional seminars.
Details on the exchange opportunities can be found in the Intranet.
