The first cross-disciplinary, cross-campus, and cross-reality course at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) “EMIA 6500C: Metaverse Cross-disciplinary Design Thinking” ended on a high note with the Demo Day on Dec 1, 2023! Honorable guests including Prof. Ting Chuen PONG (Vice-President for Administration and Business), Prof. Jimmy FUNG (Associate Provost, Teaching & Learning), Prof. Huamin QU (Dean of Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies), Dr. Beatrice CHU (Head, Professional Development of CEI), Mr. Thomas NG (Director of MTPC), and Mr. Anthony HO (Head of Digital Media, MTPC) from the Clear Water Bay campus, as well as Prof. Lionel M. NI (President), Prof. Jingshen WU (Vice-President, Teaching & Learning), and Prof. Man CHAN (Head of Division of Red Bird MPhil) from HKUST (Guangzhou), joined the course closing ceremony. Read more

Congratulations to Prof. Ying XUE, Research Assistant Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA), for winning US$100,000 from the Optica Foundation Challenge 2023, which recognizes ten early-career professionals with exceptional ideas to leverage optics and photonics and address global challenges. On 27-29 Jun 2023, The World Economic Forum's three-day "Summer Davos" has seen over 1,500 global leaders discuss topics centered around "Entrepreneurship: The driving force of the global economy." While HKUST has the honour to be the only university in Hong Kong invited to attend the Forum, Prof. Pan HUI, Chair Professor of the Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA), served as the moderator of the Betazone session “Healing in the Digital Realm” and led a discussion on the integration of traditional healing practices with emerging technologies to find solutions for health and well-being in the metaverse. Nathan Nan XU, PhD Candidate from Individualized Interdisciplinary Program, won the Second Place together with his team at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech) Conference Student Poster Contest held on 21 April 2022. A total of eleven posters were presented online. The research topic they presented was “Smart Tracking Tray System for A Smart and Sustainable Wet Lab Community”, which is part of the HKUST Sustainable Smart Campus (SSC) As Living Lab project outcome. IPO Student Ambassador (SA) Award Ceremony and Appreciation Gathering was held on 30 September 2021. Prof. Huamin QU, Director of IPO, thanked the Student Ambassadors for their contributions  and presented certificates to all the recognized Student Ambassadors of 2020/21. Students then joined a nice dinner and shared the SA and outreach experience of the past year. Read more

Yash AGRAWAL, a Year 3 student of Individualized Interdisciplinary Major Program (IIM), created his own major “Environmental Geoscience” to study the mechanisms and interactions of the various earth systems, such as the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, and the impact of human activity on the environment.
