Major+SUST aims to introduce a concept of sustainability to all HKUST students and develop solutions to pressing issues affecting society, organizations, the environment and the world. It allows students to integrate sustainability principles into their chosen major, addressing critical global issues related to science, engineering, business, humanities and social sciences, and other interdisciplinary areas. Graduates are well prepared to contribute positively to their organizations and society as a whole.

As stipulated in the HKUST Strategic Plan 2031 as one of the Five Strategic Objectives - An Exemplar of BEST-IN-CLASS Sustainable and Quality Practices, HKUST strives to be a sustainability leader across the region and beyond. To achieve this objective, sustainability education is one of the critical stops to create the conditions for the HKUST community to thrive sustainably within planetary resource boundaries. The Major+SUST, together with the existing minor in SUST and Major in the Environmental Management and Technology (EVMT) forms a comprehensive sustainability education model for students from different disciplines to develop the sustainability mindset and apply it in their own area of expertise.

Admission Requirements

The Major+SUST program will not admit students directly through JUPAS or Direct Admissions. Rather, students will declare their intention to enroll in the extended major of SUST via the Opt-in arrangement during Year 1 Summer term (for AIS, SENG and SSCI) or Year 2 Winter term (for SBM and SHSS).  If approved, students will officially enroll in SUST with effect from Year 2 Fall (for AIS, SENG and SSCI)/ Year 2 Spring (for SBM and SHSS).

The Extended Major in Sustainability is available for combination with Science Major (BSc program in Ocean Science and Technology), Engineering Majors (Majors offered by Departments of CBE, CIVL, CSE, IEDA and MAE), Business Majors (BBA programs in Professional Accounting, Economics, Global Business, Information Systems, Management, Marketing, Operations Management; BSc programs in Economics and Finance, Quantitative Finance, and Risk Management and Business Intelligence), all majors offered by School of Humanities and Social Science and Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (except BSc in Individualized Interdisciplinary Majors).
